Vallejo City Unified School District Welcomes New Leadership as School Year Begins
VALLEJO, Calif. – Vallejo City Unified School District (VCUSD) is excited to announce the start of the new school year on Monday, Aug. 19, 2024. This year marks a significant period of transition and growth for the district as we welcome a new superintendent and seven school principals who are new to the positions or have transferred to another school.
New Superintendent:
The district is proud to introduce Rubén Aurelio as our new superintendent following the retirement of William Spalding, who brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to educational excellence. His leadership vision focuses on fostering strong community relations, enhancing academic outcomes, and ensuring every student receives a high-quality, enriching educational experience.
New Principals:
We are also welcoming seven new principals who will be leading their respective schools with dedication and passion:
- Kensaburo Daniels at Glen Cove Elementary
- Christi Glasco at Mare Island Health and Fitness Academy
- Camille Jefferson at Hogan Middle School
- Sue Kelly at Lincoln Elementary
- Janice Lubin at Vallejo Charter School*
- Gretchen Ledda at Cooper Elementary
- Kehinde Stevenson at Jesse Bethel High School
*Lubin transferred from Cooper Elementary to Vallejo Charter School.
Each of these leaders brings a unique set of skills and experiences that will contribute to our school's continued success and improvement. Their collective efforts will be instrumental in guiding our students toward academic achievement and personal growth.
Focus on Literacy:
VCUSD will continue its commitment to implement a proactive and rigorous strategy to enhance student outcomes. We are focused on enhancing classroom instruction and support structures to ensure a high-quality education for all students.
As we continue towards improvement, the district is placing a strong emphasis on literacy and enhancing academic outcomes. By implementing targeted literacy programs and innovative teaching strategies, we aim to ensure every student achieves reading proficiency and excels academically. Our dedicated educators and staff are committed to fostering a love for reading and learning, creating a solid foundation for future success. We are dedicated to improving educational outcomes and empowering our students to reach their full potential through these efforts.
Attendance Matters:
Attendance in school plays a crucial role in a student’s academic and personal development and will be a recurring theme during the school year. Regular attendance helps students stay on track with their studies and ensures they don’t miss out on critical learning opportunities. Consistent participation fosters a sense of responsibility and discipline, preparing students for future demands. Moreover, attending school regularly allows students to engage in social interactions, which is essential for developing communication and teamwork skills. It also allows teachers to identify and address learning difficulties early on, providing timely support to those who need it.
Excitement for the New School Year:
Preparing for the first day of school, the VCUSD community is energized and enthusiastic about the opportunities. Our dedicated teachers, staff, and administrators have worked tirelessly over the summer to ensure a smooth and successful start to the academic year.
"We are thrilled to welcome our students back to school and are confident that the new leadership team will bring fresh perspectives and innovative approaches to education," Superintendent Aurelio said. "Together, we will strive to create an environment where every student can thrive and reach their full potential."
